Charice, the most talented girl in the world according to Oprah Winfrey, has been hitting her fans (as well as haters) with one surprise after another. Over the past months, the singing sensation has been shocking the world with photos showing herself with a boyish hairdo, a masculine fashion sense and tattoos galore.
Now, she’s media fodder once again after allegedly eloping with Alyssa Quijano, a former finalist of The X Factor Philippines and member of the all-girl group A.K.A. JAM. The two already knew each other even before the reality show, being rivals in singing competitions when they were younger. During X Factor, where Charice sat as one of the judges, the two became closer and have kept in touch even after the show ended. According to rumors, Charice and Ayssa are currently in a secret relationship and have decided to ran away to some place where they can live together, far from the prying eyes of the public and their respective families. There are no confirmation yet as to the veracity of these rumors.
Charice’s mother, Raquel Pempengco is quick on defending her daughter. In a text message sent to ABS-CBN News on Tuesday, Mrs. Pempengco revealed that a certain Lisa Quijano, who identified herself as the mother of Alyssa, called her to ask for help because her daughter reportedly ran away with two other girls.
Tumawag po sa akin yung mommy nung girl… Asking po for help… Nakatakas daw po kasi kahapon ng madaling araw, na may nakakita na dalawang babae din in a grey car. Nagpapatawag po ng media dahil ‘yun daw po ang akala niyang makakatulong para makita niya ang anak niya,” Raquel said.
She added that she will not believe that Charice eloped with Alyssa until her daughter confirms the rumors herself. She also urged the public not to judge Charice based on the way she looks.
“Kung ako po ang tatanungin di ko po masasabing tanan ‘yun coz we are not sure if it’s really Charice who got her… Hangga’t hindi po mismo natin naririnig kay Charice ang totoong pagkatao niya… Para sa akin ‘di po dapat mag-judge dahil sa physical appearance lang,” she said.
Last week, Mrs. Pempengco has given her daughter the blessing to come out and finally “confirm her real identity” if that will make her happy and free. She made the statement as a response to reports that Charice is set to come out and admit her sexual preference via a TV interview that is yet to be aired.
According to the grapevine, Charice is planning to make her homosexuality public on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, an American talk show hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, a self-confessed lesbian. DeGeneres invited Charice to appear on her show after watching one of the Pinay singer’s YouTube videos in 2007. Charice performed two songs on the The Ellen DeGeneres Show in December of that year.
Charice eventually received invitations to appear in other international TV shows such as The Paul O’Grady Show and the The Oprah Winfrey Show. It was Oprah Winfrey who paved the way for Charice’s international career by introducing the then 16-year-old singer to top record producer David Foster.
