Born Jessica Elizabeth Sanchez on August 4, 1995 in Chula Vista, California, Jessica Sanchez became a household name after joining and ending up as the runner-up of the reality singing show, American Idol Season 11. She is the eldest among three siblings to a Filipina mother and a Mexican-American father.
She is currently signed to Interscope Records and is slated to release her first studio album in 2013.
Jessica Sanchez started singing at the tender age of 2. When she was 11 years old, she competed in the first season of America’s Got Talent. Her favorite recording artists include Eminem, Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Etta James, Christina Aguilera, and Michael Jackson.
During her stint in American Idol, Jessica consistently impressed not only the judges but also viewers from different parts of the world with her powerful performances. She advanced to the competion with flying colors and received raves and standing ovations from the three judges: Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson. Lopez described her talent as beyond her years while Tyler quipped “When God was giving out vocal cords, you were so at the front of the line,” after one of Jessica’s performances.
Jackson named her as “one of the best talents in the whole country” after her flawless rendition of the Whitney Houston classic, “I Will Always Love You.”
She became an instant celebrity in the Philippines and Filipinos from different parts of the globe showed their support by casting votes online.
However, Jessica almost got eliminated during the season’s Top 7 week after it was revealed that she received the lowest number of votes among the contestants. This shocked the judges and the live audience. While singing Deborah Cox’s “Nobody’s Supposed to Be Here”, Lopez ran on stage and cut Jessica’s performance. Tyler and Jackson followed on stage and declared that they will be using the “Judges’ Save” to keep Jessica in the competition. Upset by the unexpected turn of events, Jackson said “This girl is one of the best singers in America, ever … Please everybody, please vote for the best. It’s about finding the best.” The “Save” made Jessica the first female and the fourth finalist in American Idol history spared from elimination.
By the end of the competition, Jessica faced Phillip Phillips at the finale. During the results show, Jessica performed “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” with Jennifer Holliday and received a standing ovation from the judges (watch video below). By the end of the night, Jessica was declared the runner-up while Phillip Phillips was named the winner.
Jessica Sanchez recently performed in a sold-out Valentine Concert in the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Philippines. She is also set to appear soon in the hit musical TV series, Glee, wherein she is cast in a recurring role.
