Julia Barretto, the 15-year-old daughter of actress Marjorie Barretto and comedian Dennis Padilla, is set to portray the lead role in the upcoming Kapamilya fantaserye, Cofradia. The series is based on the 1953 film of the same title starring Gloria Romero which was also remade by Gina Alajar in 1973.
The 1953 film was adapted from a comics novel created by Dominador Ad. Castillo which tells the story of a meek girl named, Cofradia, who was subject to ridicule and mockery because of her very dark complexion. With the lighting of a mysterious candle, Confradia turns into a fair-skinned, beautiful woman well-loved by everyone. However, Cofradia returns to her original appearance once the flame of the candle snuffs.
A talent of Star Magic, Julia Barretto was seen in other ABS-CBN shows including Walang Kapalit, Kokey and Palos. Teen heartthrob Jerome Ponce, who plays Luke in the hit daytime series, Be Careful with My Heart, and former Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Clash 2010 housemate Tricia Santos are also reported to be part of the Cofradia cast.
Will Julia Barretto give justice to the role popularized by Gloria Romero and Gina Alajar? We will all find out when the latest version of Cofradia premiers on the second quarter of 2013 on the Kapamilya network.
Meanwhile, Julia’s controversial aunt, Claudine Barretto, is reportedly making a comeback in the Kapamilya network. According to rumors, the actress who’ve been involved in numerous nasty controversies over the past few years, is set to co-star with sister Gretchen Barretto in the drama series Alta, a shelved project ABS-CBN is planning to revive. It will be remembered that Claudine had a falling out with ABS-CBN when she transferred to rival network GMA in 2010.
